What to Eat After a Tooth Extraction
July 11, 2025 9:00 amTooth extractions are a routine part of dental care, whether it’s wisdom teeth removal or taking out a damaged tooth. While the procedure itself is straightforward, recovery depends heavily on what you do afterward—especially when it comes to eating. Knowing what to eat (and what to avoid) can help protect the healing site and keep you more comfortable.
Start with Soft, Cool Foods
In the first 24 to 48 hours, your mouth will be sensitive. Choose soft, cool foods that don’t require much chewing. Yogurt, pudding, applesauce, smoothies (no straws), and mashed potatoes are great options. These soothe the area and reduce the chance of irritation. Avoid anything too hot—it can break down the blood clot and delay healing.
Gradually Add Texture
As healing progresses, you can slowly add foods with more texture. Scrambled eggs, soft pasta, oatmeal, and steamed veggies are easy on the mouth. The key is to avoid chewing near the extraction site. Keep things soft and nutrient-rich. Protein shakes and blended soups can help you stay full without much effort.
What to Avoid
Skip anything crunchy, sticky, spicy, or too acidic. Chips, popcorn, nuts, and hard bread can disturb the clot or get stuck in the socket. Acidic juices or spicy foods may sting or cause inflammation. Also, don’t use straws. Suction can dislodge the clot and lead to dry socket—a painful complication that’s better avoided.
Nutrition Matters More Than You Think
Eating well after an extraction isn’t just about comfort. Your body needs vitamins and minerals to support healing. Try to include foods with protein, vitamin C, and zinc. If eating is difficult, talk to your dentist about options that still provide nutrition without added discomfort.
