How to Handle a Dental Emergency Calmly
December 31, 2022 8:19 amWhile you can never fully control what your emotions will be during a dental emergency, there are some things you can do now to help you more calmly handle whatever situation may come up in the future.
Have Your Dentist’s Number Handy
Take the time now to save your dentist’s number and location in your phone or place a piece of paper with this and other emergency contact information in a visible and easily accessible place. When a dental emergency suddenly occurs, you don’t want to have to waste precious time searching for the information of an emergency dentist. Your head might not be in the right place to do so quickly and efficiently anyways.
Research Basic First Steps for Common Dental Emergencies
While your first course of action in any dental emergency should be to contact your dentist for their professional advice, it does help to know some basic first steps for common issues. For example, if you have a knocked-out tooth, handle the tooth gently by it’s chewing surface (not the root) and gently rinse it in milk or water. Do not rub or dry it with a cloth or towel. Place it in a container with milk to keep it moist so the tooth has a greater chance of being reattached into your mouth.
Have a Dental Emergency Kit at the Ready
You may already have a first aid kit. Add some dental-specific items that would come in handy during a dental emergency. Useful inclusions would be a small, sealable container for a knocked-out tooth, plastic gloves, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, gauze, dental floss, and orthodontic wax.
